FIRST LET'S ADDRESS "THE PROBLEM"

There is an increasing number of youths that are at a loss of direction and engaging in risky activities. Once a student has a past of misbehavior and lack of academic skills, it takes a positive effort to help redirect their lives. It is reported that 60-75% of juveniles currently in the system suffer from emotional, behavioral, learning and developmental disabilities at a much higher rate than incidences in the rest of the population. Most are not criminal in nature. However, a high percentage suffer the lack of attachment to school with chronic school failure. Where there is criminal behavior, it is usually within the family where there is drug use, trauma and other issues. The problem we see is over two-thirds of youth in foster care is involved with the juvenile justice system and experience mental health issues.
